Essential Tips for Looking after Your Vehicle

Your vehicle is probably very important to you; it is a statement of who you are and you want to keep it running as long as possible. Like you, your car require regular checks to ensure that everything is working as it should and that it is reliable and safe to travel in. These regular checks may mean the difference between a reliable, working machine and the need to trade in your car for a newer model sooner than you’d like.

Taking care of your car can involve these simple and easy checks designed to keep the machine running as recommended by show plates direct

  • Check your Radiator and Cooling System

Checking your radiator coolant is a simple process usually involving simply looking at the plastic overflow bottle in most cars. The ideal level should between the low and high markings. Wait for the radiator to cool before removing the cap to check the level of the radiator. If your car is losing coolant, it is likely that there may be a leak somewhere. In this case, your car may need professional assessment to fix the problem.

  • Check your Engine Oil

Checking your oil is another way to ensure your vehicle is running optimally. To do that, it is advisable to park the car on level ground and then start the engine. Let the engine run for a short time before turning it off. While the engine is warm, remove the dipstick and wipe it with a piece of cloth. Reinsert it, making sure it is fully inserted, before removing it to check the oil levels. The ideal level is between the low and high markings.

  • Check the Pressure and Condition of Tires

Driving with incorrect tire pressure can significantly reduce the life if the tires, not to mention make your car less safe. You can check the correct tire pressure on the tire placard that is often found inside one of the front doors. If it is not there, check the owner’s manual. You also want to ensure the tires have enough tread. The legal minimum for any surface is 1.5mm although it is a good idea to replace the tires before they get this far.

  • Check Your Battery’s Condition

While checking your car battery is important, it is equally as important to note that the process can be dangerous. Do not attempt to check your battery near a naked flame or lit cigarette. That’s because car batteries can be very explosive and the liquid inside is corrosive to the skin, eye and even clothing.

That said you still need to ensure that the battery is at the optimum functionality. To do that, carefully remove the caps and check that the fluid inside is deep enough to allow the plates to be completely immersed. There are some batteries without removable caps. But they often have an indicator on the side to let you know the liquid levels. If the level is low, top it up with distilled water but be careful not to overfill.
